Affiliate Programs, How The Google AdSense revenue?

There are times Google’s heralded ad affiliate program isn’t in your long term business interest. Oh no I said it!
AdSense isn’t the unstoppable revenue engine for every eBusiness. Before I am taken out and flogged by the eCommerce pundits — please let me explain what I mean in my defense.
I make revenues from AdSense at a very high click-through rate. I experience high click-through rates with AdSense without resorting to questionable tactics like tricking site users with photos (the AdSense trick and tip dujour).
So my perspective is from one who has made decent income from AdSense to fund aspects of his business like advertising seminars — and outsourcing to his virtual assistants. Yes, AdSense is a legitimate and significant revenue source. However evaluate AdSense with some type of balance.
By now you may have heard about people like Joel Comm’s six figure income with AdSense, or Jason Calacanis of Weblogs being on his way to generating 1 million dollars in AdSense revenue. Google’s Ad revenue sharing affiliate program for publishers certainly seems to be an eSales Nirvana for many webmasters.
But there are obvious and not so obvious times not to use AdSense ads on your sites. Let’s list - examine - and explain them below.
~~~~> 1. On Sales or Mini-sites
This is a no-brainer. If you are trying to sell a particular product that is important to your bottomline, you don’t want AdSense ads distracting your customers from either joining your email list, or hindering your site’s online sales process.
However I do see hybrid sites that are mini-sites or full scale eCommerce sites, with AdSense at the bottom of their pages. This might not be so bad since only 1% - 15% of your site visitors will either buy from you or fill out a form.
The thinking with this approach is you might as well make money from disinterested parties using up your server’s bandwidth.
~~~~~> 2. SEO Business Sites
If your livelihood depends on search engine optimization or marketing for a living you might want to think twice about displaying AdSense Ads on your site. I can tell you this from personal experience. I once was on top of MSN for search engine marketing in my local area. I concentrated on my local area because I found people felt more comfortable hiring an eCommerce consultant locally.
One day my site fails totally out of the MSN index. After intense study I noticed that I obviously had a filter on my site from MSN.
I analyzed all the top ranking sites in MSN and noticed the only difference between me and the other top ranking sites was I had Google AdSense ads on my site. Someone at MSN felt that my AdSense ads, and perhaps to a less extent, my book on SEO, was getting a free ride in the MSN search engine database.
In fact I noticed that there were no sites with AdSense ads for at least the first 3 pages. Plus the sites with AdSense were only using 1 ad unit at the bottom of the home page (there were very few of them in the top 5 pages).
I knew it was strange to not have AdSense ads on the top Internet marketing sites. This prompted me to scan other industries where I noticed the same trend.
Many of the leading SEO gurus have sites that have been banned from the top listings by the search engines. It seems the more visible you become, the more of a target your sites are to the search engine auditors.
Some of my sites are still on the top of MSN with AdSense ads but that doesn’t mean they won’t also be targets in the future.
Let’s face the facts. MSN and Yahoo! have competing ad networks to Google’s, and this competitive situation is rife for a potential backlash against SEO sites with AdSense ads.
Many SEOs will point to exceptions to this position. However you have been warned!
Think about it, how long will MSN and Yahoo! sit back and watch SEO driven websites use their search indexes to fund Google? Did you know SEO in MSN and Yahoo(!) — is much easier to obtain.
Therefore optimized sites are creating an ad sales wealth transfer from MSN and Yahoo into the pockets of Google! It won’t be long before Yahoo! and MSN begin to devalue ranking on AdSense sites in their databases — if not outright ban them.
If you are in the search engine business stay search engine neutral, or create multiple sites for different search engines.
~~~~~> 3. When AdSense Becomes Your Only Business Model
When you become so myopic in your thinking that you build a business solely on AdSense revenue — think again my friend. Why build a business solely on the largess of Google?
I don’t know if your realize it or not, but the sites making the real big AdSense money usually have a following that doesn’t depend on the search engines. Internet mavens like Chris Pirillo or Joel Comm have been on the Internet a while and have followings for their websites. Therefore they can consistently make six figures with AdSense.
These content powerhouses are an asset to Google and not the other way around. But do you think Google is going to sit back and watch just anybody make big bucks off of their top rankings?
If you do a search on most keywords you will notice many of the top ranking sites are news sites, .gov sites, or .org sites these days. The only exception is in industries where these sites don’t really exist like eCommerce industries (clothing, shopping, etc.).
No doubt in most industries you will notice a conspicuous scarity of AdSense sites in the top rankings. In other words don’t bet your future fortunes on AdSense.
An IPO based on projections of AdSense revenue isn’t in the future for the average eBusiness. Think of Google AdSense as supplemental income. Building a business solely on AdSense revenue isn’t just silly — it’s just plain stupid.

Most marketers seem to think that there is a magic formula to build Internet wealth. Every affiliate marketer is always looking for the successful market that gives the biggest paycheck. It is more complicated then that, it is good marketing practice that have been proven with dedication and hard work.
There are tactics that continue to work in the affiliate marketing world and have worked before with online marketing. To increase your sales in the affiliate marketing world online and survive you can use these three top marketing tips.
Here are the three tactics?
1. When marketing separate products, use unique web pages to promote them. It is best to have a site focusing on each separate product and nothing else. Do not try to save money on web hosting by lumping all your products together
Include testimonials from customers who have already tried the product and make sure they are willing to allow you to use their name and photos for the specific product that you are marketing. You should always include product reviews on the website so your visitors will have an understanding of what the product can do to those that make a purchase.
You can also include additional pages on your website and include articles highlighting the uses of your product. Your headlines should attract the readers to want to read more, and even contact you. Be sure to highlight your special points. Make the pages compelling and include a call to action on the information. Getting targeted traffic to your product is the most important in marketing. If the person that visits, your site has no interest whatsoever in your offer they will move on and never return. Write articles for publication in e-reports and e-zines. By doing this you will be able to locate, publications that are focusing on your targeted customers and what you offer might just grab their interest.
3. Getting your visitors to opt-in to your newsletter or e-zine, offer something of value to your readers. You can give a free report or a sample of your product or maybe a free trial. When possible position you opt-in forum at the topside of your page so they simply cannot miss it. Create autoresponder messages that will be sent to those who opt-in to your sign up box. Research shows it takes seven customer contacts to take action.
Two things that can happen with your web page closed sale or the prospect leave your page and never returns. By sending useful information into their email inbox, they will be reminded of your product that they had showed interest in. Be sure that your message reminds them of the specific reasons to buy your product. Do not make your emails look like a sales letter.
You need to focus on important points on how your product can make their life easier and more enjoyable. Make sure to include compelling subject lines in your email campaign. Try to avoid using words such as ‘free’ as much as possible. Spam filters will dump those kinds of words into the junk folder before your reader gets a chance to read it. Make sure to convince those that have opted-in that they will be missing on something if they do not get your product or services.

I Can Get you Removed From Search Engines

One of my clients was talking to me today. He is using our search engine submission tool and was very confused as why his website was showing some weird string queries.

First background about his site. His site has been online since 2000 and is ranked very well on all search engines. He site is very much devoted to real estate.

Couple of days he discovered that his site shows some weird things. To protect my client website I will use (example.com).

What we have done is google “site:www.example.com”

This will show you how many urls of your website google has. However one search showed example.com/?link1=10

He was puzzled as to what the ?link1=10 actually means. So he called us and ask me about this weir stuff that was happening. I guess sometimes we go the extra mile for our clientsJ

What has happened?

What is this /?link1=10?. Nothing was indicating that he has this page on his website, in fact this exact page does not even exist, but yet google found it.

Page /?link1=10 or anything that has example.com/?something_goes_here are called string queries which are used to identify products or even real estate search for homes if customers can view homes on your website.

With result of google finding this weird page, google automatically lowered my client site to the unknown. Basically my client lost ranking from google and other search engines.

Why this happened?

Using sting queries you can simply remove any website from search results, however it will take time to do that. Your website first must return status code 200-OK. This 200 page is simply a soft lending page for your 404 page.

To give you an example, If you remove a page from your web-site and than you re-visit that page again it will show 404 error. In some cases you may set up a custom 404 page which results in “not found”.

To see what you have just go to your website and type “www.mysite.com/anythinguwant.html”.

This should return 404 page or custom 404 page.

But back to 202 pages. To see if your website returns 202 page, search for a tool online. Use “header checker” as your search term.

When you get result it should be similar to this: “HTTP/1.1 200 OK”. It has to show 200OK.

Here is how it works:

To remove pages from search engines you need to have a lots of duplicate content. When I say a lot, we are talking 100’s of pages of duplicate content. Simply one page has to be same as the other page and 3rd page has to be same as 4th pages…etc. They all have to be on your website.

So how this “hacker”..let’s call him that, did this. He did not have access to my clients server, but still he was able to remove his site.

What he has done is checked if his website returns 202 pages OK. If it did, he than assigned random pages to his domain name.

For example: example.com/index.html?haha=iwillremoveyou or example.com/index.html?link1page=330, or example.com/index.html?haha=link2page

You get the idea. What he has done, he has assigned a string query of “haha”. Than he copied all urls into some free hosting company and just wait and relax until search engine picks it up.

Form search engine point of view these are links that point to his domain. More links you have the quicker search engines return to your website.

Because these links were pointing to some new pages on his domain, search engine though that this was a duplicate page, and now there are two main pages, and suddenly his website dropped on all search engines.

See how easy that was? Guess what, MSN is very vulnerable to this! I am not sure if they fixed it yet. If you do this on MSN, it is almost guaranteed someone site will just disappear.

Rest of the search engines, google, msn, yahoo will just lower your ranking, but will not remove you. Not matter what , it is pain to get back to top search results.

How to fix it

You will need to do mod rewrite or 301 redirect .

Make sure that there is a high demand for the product and there are a lot of searches for that type of niche the product belongs to. Make sure that you really understand what the product has to offer someone.
Next, look up the Google Keyword tool and then search for the most common keyword that can describe your product. For example, if it is a product on training your puppy, you should use dog training. The keyword tool will pull up all the keywords that people are searching for that relate to that one word and it will show how many searches a month that the keyword gets.
The Last thing to do is to register with a free account like squidoo or blogger and start creating posts with the keywords you choose to use. Make sure that you post regularly to get the search engines to spider your page. Then you could also drive some free traffic to your site after to get more money.

Affiliate marketing is a great situation for both the marketer and the affiliate. If they would work together, they can be an advantage to both. Plus the fact that it seems to make sense, it is easy and inexpensive way to start, and you can be up and running within a few days. Time and again I see people getting burned by un-ethical web companies. These companies are not just SEO companies that do not know what they are doing but also web development companies and web design companies. The most prominent thing I have been seeing lately is the use of a template site, especially in the real estate industry.
Having spoken to a lot of real estate agents in my area I have had the pleasure of dealing with certain companies that offer SEO packages to their clients but do not actually do anything with their sites after they have paid a large sum of money. Now you may think that that is bad news already, but it gets worse. Since template sites are usually mass produced very quickly they usually reside on 1 server or use the same body of code to run all web sites, it does not allow access for legitimate Search Engine Optimization companies to optimize the site correctly.
Things to look for and ask when choosing a template site provider are that first off, the company should allow other companies to do search engine optimization to their web sites. There are plenty of ways to update a web site without having the SEO company even touch the back end of the code, so there shouldn’t be an excuse as to why another optimization company could do the work for you. Next you will want to take a look at some of their pre-made web sites and see if they are optimized properly. Make sure there are

tags available, meta tags, table summary tags, alt tags and title tags. If a template company does not have these built into their system, you could be missing out on valuable traffic from the Search Engines. Also make sure that you can add links to your website on any of the pages you have.

Template sites are great for getting started on the web. The only problem is if you are not found on the internet then there is very little use for a website. The best way to get noticed is through an optimization company that knows exactly what to do to get you to the top.
On our travels we have found some great template providers as well as some very unrespectable companies. Here is a quick reference to some good template providers that allow optimization companies to work with your template web site.
Real Estate (Examples): The Good: Myrealpage.com offers Real Estate Hosting and Design solutions. They are always improving their backend software and have great customer service. Best of all, Myrealpage.com allows you to have a professional online marketing company optimize your site. They know that if their client’s web sites are coming up in the search engines they will have happier clients.
The Bad: Ubertor.com claims to be the leader in real estate web software. They have great designs and a simple back end product, but that is as far as it goes. As for optimization, you are out of luck. I have dealt with them personally and they are very optimization unfriendly. This is because they offer an optimization plan through them. I have spoken to some of the real estate agents that have used them for optimization and have heard what they do. For $998 they say they will get you organically indexed in Google. This means that somewhere on Google for an unknown keyword you will show up. Real SEO companies will target keywords and get you not just indexed by Google, but coming up on the first page for the terms that you have selected in Google, MSN and Yahoo.
General Template Sites:
Sometimes a company comes along that is just amazing. RogueRepublik.com is one of those companies. RogueRepublik.com is a definite leader in template technology. They offer a product that has gone above and beyond what people have come to expect from template web site creators. Best yet, they are 100% SEO friendly. They have great knowledge on SEO and are very friendly and helping when it comes to optimizing sites. If you plan on working with a company that provides you with a template site solution, I recommend that you do some research into if they will allow a 3rd party optimization company to optimize your site for them. As you have probably heard any times from numerous SEO companies, “What is the point of having a website if no one can find it?”, This rings true when dealing with a template provider, they must be optimizable or you could be wasting your money on their quick and easy solution.

By exchanging links with other webmasters you can get many websites to keep a link to your web site on their web sites and in return you have to put a link to their site on your web site. When the search engine indexes you site it looks and all the links on your site and it marks them on a list. The sites with more links to them are considered more important then sites with lower links back to them. Some webmasters have more then one website and what they do is put links on all of their sites to all the different pages of their other sites to make the sites seem like they have more links, this is called link farming.
Spam: Many people think that spam is just those annoying emails that offer to increase your size or guarantee weight loss, one of my favorites are the stock tips that come in from nowhere because I may actually buy stocks because someone I don’t know got my email address as well as a few thousand others and told me to buy some stock, or the annoying pop ups that appear when you are trying to read a web site. These are common forms of spam but they are not the only kind. There are also spam websites. This is when there is no content on the site of actual use and the sites content is only to try to bring in people in the hopes that you will click a link to a site that pays the first site for traffic. Some websites will pay $0.25 for every person you bring to their site. These sites are also considered spam.
Content: The content of your site is very important. You need to make sure that not only is it relevant to the topic of your site, but that it is interesting or informative to your readers/customers. If you do not change the content on your site and add items regularly you will find that people will stop visiting your site. Lets say you have a travel website and you do not update it often you may still be advertising summer vacations in the winter and will not be making as many winter vacations sales as you should be.
Page Rank: Did you ever wonder how a site gets its page rank? Each search engine does it a bit different but the basics are the same. They have a rating system and once a month they check every website on the internet and the sites get put thru this rating process. They check things like ease of use, popularity, content changes since the last time it was checked and they come up with a number and that becomes your page ranking.
Ease of Use: It is important to keep in mind when making the site that it needs to be easy to get from one page to another, and that everything is in a logical order to make things easy to find next time. How well the site is designed is a factor in your ranking.
